might be a slow day today.

why?

looks like rain.

sometimes they come out in the rain.

that makes sense, coolidge agreed.

officer wilson and cadet coolidge had been paired a half hour ago.

officers and cadets - or sometimes two cadets - were paired on a daily basis, to patrol highway 63.

and rotated, so they did not get too comfortable or uncomfortable with each other.

wilson was an old cowhand from the rio grande, and reputed to be a man of few words.

coolidge was a rookie, and she was determined not to antagonize wilson.

wlson guided the cruiser out on to the road.

there were few vehicles on the road, although the sun had come up.

the sky overhead was gray.

it was a lonely stretch, equidistant from memphis and sparta.

lost souls and wanderers and other pedestrians tended to be spotted closer to the two metropolises.

they rode along in silence.

well, what do you know.

what do i know?

there is somebody up ahead.

yeah, i see them.

they passed the walker and pulled over a hundred and thirty meters ahead of hm.

a couple of raindrops hit the windshield.

the walker trudged up to them at a slow but regular pace,

wilson and coolidge got out of the cruiser.

good morning, the walker addressed them cheerfully.

he was a caucasian male human, about five feet five inches, between the ages of twenty-five and seventy-five.

he wore a plain gray suit and hat, not brand new, but not two shabby,

and purple and white running shes.

good morning, wilson answered. looking for a lift?

i guess. i know the drill.

you know the drill? wilson asked.

sure enough. i been here before.’

you mean, you were picked up before and released? coolidge asked.

you see me here before you.

so you must have been released into somebody’s custody, wilson stated imperturbably.

sure enough.

get in the back of the vehicle.

glad to. get out of this rain.
